Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said President Bola Tinubu inherited a struggling economy when he took office in 2023. Akpabio also said the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress administration has enough achievements to present to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
He spoke on Monday when members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, TETFund and NELFund visited him in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Akpabio said 27 states could not pay workers’ salaries and pensions when Tinubu assumed office.
“The current President has done a lot for Nigerians. He met an economy in shambles. When he came in, 27 states could not pay salaries and pensions, but today, the story has changed because of his reengineering and thinking out of the box.”
He also expressed confidence that Nigerians would support Tinubu for a second term.
“In 2027, Nigerians will separate the chaff from the grains and re-elect President Tinubu for a second term in office.”
Akpabio lists Tinubu administration’s achievements
The Senate President said the government would campaign on its record in several sectors. He listed the economy, agriculture, security, education and fiscal policy among the areas where he said the administration had made progress.
“We will have something to tell Nigerians about the unprecedented achievements of Mr President at the campaign grounds.”
Akpabio also criticised opposition politicians for failing to acknowledge the administration’s achievements.
“Those in the opposition know too well the achievements of this government in the area of the economy, agriculture, security, education and fiscal policy, but because they are in the opposition, they won’t say it.”
Senate President defends 10th National Assembly
Akpabio also defended the performance of the 10th National Assembly. He said the Senate had passed laws aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
“The 10th Senate under my leadership has made giant strides, and we are very proud of it. We will continue to collaborate with the Executive arm of government to achieve more for Nigerians.”
He also urged lawmakers who may not return to the Senate in 2027 to remain committed to the APC and Tinubu’s administration.
Committee explains Uyo visit
Earlier, the committee chairman, Senator Dandutse Mohammed, said the visit was part of the lawmakers’ constitutional responsibilities. He said the committee was also in Akwa Ibom for sensitisation and oversight of projects funded by TETFund.
“Nigerian parents are happy because of TETFund and NELFund. We are in Akwa Ibom State on sensitisation and oversight of all of the infrastructure executed by TETFund.”
Mohammed thanked Akpabio for his support and described education as key to Nigeria’s development.
