Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed strong confidence that the security challenges confronting Nigeria will soon be overcome. He said President Bola Tinubu‘s administration is giving the situation its full attention.
Akpabio made the remarks on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) at the National Assembly. The delegation was led by the association’s National President, Dr Lima Ahmed.
Recent rescue of Oyo schoolchildren shows progress, says Akpabio
The Senate President cited the recent release of abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State as evidence of the government’s commitment. He described this as a demonstration that the administration was taking decisive action.
“As Nigerians, we are all aware of the insecurity challenges that we are currently facing,” Akpabio said.
“All I can say is that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is giving the situation its utmost attention, and that is what led to the recent release of the school children that were abducted in Oyo State.”
He urged the public to avoid relying solely on social media for information about the country’s security situation. According to him, such platforms often fail to reflect the full reality.
“The current administration is doing a whole lot,” he added.
“I can assure you that very soon, the issue of security would be a thing of the past. Don’t rely on what you hear or see on social media. They are not a true reflection of what is happening in our country.”
Nation continues to face multiple security threats
Nigeria has been dealing with a range of security problems including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence. Many states have experienced deadly attacks and mass abductions over recent months.
The Federal Government has consistently promised to restore security through military operations and other measures. However, concerns remain among citizens about the persistence of these challenges.
Akpabio comments on women in politics
The Senate President also addressed the issue of women’s participation in elective politics. He noted that the reluctance of women to support each other during elections stems from the conduct of some female office holders in the past.
Akpabio suggested that the actions of certain women who had previously served in public office had created negative perceptions. This, he said, had affected opportunities for other women seeking political positions.
National Assembly backs international golf tournament
The Senate President pledged the support of the National Assembly for the upcoming international ladies golf tournament. The event is scheduled to be hosted at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
Earlier during the visit, Dr Lima Ahmed thanked Akpabio for receiving the delegation. She extended a formal invitation to the tournament and decorated the Senate President as Grand Patron of the association.
The courtesy visit provided an opportunity for the association to strengthen ties with the National Assembly. It also allowed Akpabio to address broader national issues beyond the immediate purpose of the meeting.
