President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate rescue operation following the mass abduction of worshippers in Niger State. The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement issued by the State House on Tuesday.
Tinubu condemned the attack and described the perpetrators as “enemies of peace and enemies of humanity.”
“Those who carried out this cowardly attack on defenceless Nigerians are enemies of peace and enemies of humanity, who will not go scot-free.”
The President also condoled with the families of those killed in the attack. He assured them that the government would work to secure the release of the abducted victims.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who were killed in this barbaric assault and pray that Almighty God grant them eternal rest, and grant their loved ones the fortitude to bear this painful loss.”
Tinubu further assured the affected families that the government would not abandon them.
“You are not alone. The entire nation shares your anguish. We will not rest until your sons, daughters, mothers and fathers are brought back safely to you.”
Security agencies ordered to act
The President directed the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other security and intelligence agencies to launch a coordinated rescue operation. He also vowed that Nigeria would not surrender to terrorism.
“Terror will not cow Nigeria. We will defend our people, protect our communities, and uphold the sanctity of human life.”
Tinubu also expressed solidarity with the people and government of Niger State.
“My prayers are with the people of Niger State at this difficult time. The Federal Government stands firmly with the state government and will provide all necessary support to aid recovery, relief and security reinforcement.”
Terrorists abduct worshippers in Niger
The incident occurred at Kpenya Mosque in Gidan-Zana, Kpenya village, Dekara District, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The attackers reportedly stormed the mosque around 2pm during Jumat prayers and began abducting worshippers.
Children, women and elderly residents were among those reportedly taken by the attackers. Some residents also fled into a nearby forest during the attack. The attackers reportedly abducted the village head of Ka’ada, who had recently regained his freedom after spending time in captivity. They also reportedly abducted the 90-year-old father of the District Head of Dekar.
