Tinubu admits reforms caused hardship, says economy needs painful surgery

President Bola Tinubu says his economic reforms have caused hardship but insists the measures are necessary to stabilise Nigeria's economy and drive growth.

President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the hardship caused by his administration’s economic reforms, saying the difficult measures were necessary to stabilise Nigeria’s economy and lay the foundation for long-term growth.

The President made the remarks while commissioning projects at the Wasa District in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He compared the reforms to a painful surgical procedure that aims to save a patient’s life.

Tinubu defends economic reforms

Tinubu said Nigerians had endured difficult moments since his administration introduced major economic reforms. However, he insisted the policies were beginning to produce positive results.

“The pain is temporary. Like surgery, difficult decisions are sometimes necessary to save a life.”

He urged Nigerians to remain patient, adding that the reforms would create a stronger economy and improve living standards in the long run.

The President also said his administration remains committed to expanding infrastructure across the country. According to him, ongoing projects will improve transportation, boost economic activities and attract more private investment.

President highlights infrastructure projects

Tinubu described infrastructure development as a key part of his administration’s economic agenda. He said projects such as the Wasa development would improve connectivity and support business growth.

He added that the government would continue investing in roads and other critical infrastructure despite current economic challenges. According to him, these investments will strengthen the country’s development efforts and create more opportunities for Nigerians.

What happens next?

The Federal Government is expected to continue implementing its economic reforms alongside major infrastructure projects. Meanwhile, many Nigerians will closely watch whether the policies deliver the economic relief and growth promised by the Tinubu administration.
