Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated after a sharp new warning from Donald Trump.
Donald Trump has ordered the United States Navy to “shoot and kill” any boats caught laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a social media post, Trump said there should be “no hesitation” in responding to any vessel attempting to place mines in the key waterway. He also announced that US mine-clearing operations in the strait would continue at a much higher level.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Any disruption there can quickly affect global fuel prices, supply chains, and financial markets.
The latest statement comes as tensions between the United States and Iran remain high. Iranian leaders have said no further peace talks can happen while a US blockade of Iranian-linked shipping continues.
Iranian officials also said no delegation would travel to Pakistan for proposed negotiations unless the blockade is lifted.
Shipping activity in the region has already slowed sharply, raising concerns among traders and governments worldwide.
Analysts warn that any military clash in the Strait of Hormuz could have immediate economic consequences far beyond the Middle East.
With both sides holding firm positions, the risk of a wider confrontation in one of the world’s busiest sea lanes continues to grow.
