Trump launches project to escort ships in Strait of Hormuz

US plans naval operation to guide stranded vessels amid rising tensions with Iran.

Donald Trump has announced a new US-led operation to escort stranded ships through the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions with Iran continue. The initiative, named “Project Freedom,” is set to begin Monday and aims to safely guide vessels out of restricted waters.

The US says the move is a humanitarian effort to assist thousands of sailors and unblock global shipping routes. Around 20,000 crew members have been stranded since Iran restricted traffic in the strait following the outbreak of conflict. US forces, including ships and aircraft under US Central Command, will support the operation.

Iran has warned that any US interference could violate the ongoing ceasefire, raising concerns about further escalation. At the same time, both sides are reportedly engaged in talks, though no agreement has been reached.

The Strait of Hormuz handles about 20% of global oil and gas shipments, making the disruption a major driver of rising energy prices worldwide.

As the operation begins, the risk of confrontation remains, even as diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes.
