US President Donald Trump is set to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday as the months-long war with Iran continues to shape global diplomacy, energy markets and security discussions.
Trump is attending the opening of the general debate of the 81st UN General Assembly, which runs from September 22 to 28 at UN headquarters in New York. The annual debate brings together heads of state and government to discuss major international issues.
The Iran conflict is expected to feature prominently during Trump’s meetings with foreign leaders. He is scheduled to meet leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council states, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
The meeting comes amid continuing concerns over attacks and disruptions around key regional shipping routes. US officials said freedom of navigation and the security of major maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab, will be among the issues discussed.
A Series of Bilateral Meetings
Trump is also scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with international leaders during his visit. His agenda includes talks with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Venezuelan interim leader Delcy Rodriguez, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen. Trump met French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday ahead of the UN address. He is also due to meet New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani during his visit to the city.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also expected to attend the UN gathering. However, US officials said there were no plans at the time for Trump to meet directly with Iranian officials.
The UN gathering comes as the conflict continues to affect global energy markets and raises concerns over wider instability in the Middle East. Gulf states have faced economic and security pressures linked to the conflict, making their discussions with Washington a major part of Trump’s diplomatic schedule.
Trump is expected to use his address and meetings to discuss the Iran conflict alongside other major international issues, including the war in Ukraine and the broader security situation in the Middle East.
