US and Iran sign interim agreement

The United States and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at paving the way for a long-term agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme.

US President Donald Trump signed the interim agreement on Wednesday while attending the G7 summit in France. The 14-point memorandum commits Iran not to procure or develop a nuclear weapon and outlines plans for a proposed $300 billion reconstruction and economic development fund for the country.

However, several major issues remain unresolved, including the future of Iran’s nuclear programme. Both countries have agreed to continue negotiations toward a permanent settlement within 60 days, although the deadline can be extended if necessary.

The agreement was signed ahead of a planned meeting between US and Iranian representatives in Switzerland. It remains unclear whether that meeting will still take place following the signing of the memorandum.

The interim deal is now in effect as Washington and Tehran begin negotiations aimed at reaching a broader and lasting agreement.
