Colombia beat Uzbekistan 3-1 in World Cup opener

Colombia marked their return to the FIFA World Cup with a convincing 3-1 victory over debutants Uzbekistan.

The South Americans claimed all three points at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to move top of Group K. Daniel Munoz opened the scoring with a brilliant volley after connecting with a precise pass from Luis Diaz.

Uzbekistan fought back in the second half and equalised through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, who headed home after Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas failed to hold an initial effort.

However, Colombia responded quickly. Luis Diaz restored the lead minutes later, with his shot finding the net despite goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov getting both hands to the ball. Substitute Jaminton Campaz added a late third goal to seal the win.

The victory is an important start for Colombia, who missed out on qualification for the 2022 World Cup. Uzbekistan, making their first appearance at the tournament, impressed in spells and came close to scoring again through Akmal Mozgovoy and Jakhongir Urozov.

Colombia will face DR Congo in their next Group K match, while Uzbekistan take on Portugal as they search for their first World Cup points.
