US Justice Department investigates E Jean Carroll over Trump lawsuits

The US Justice Department is reportedly investigating writer E Jean Carroll over possible perjury claims linked to her lawsuits against Donald Trump.

The United States Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into author and columnist E Jean Carroll, according to reports from CBS News and CNN. Investigators are examining whether Carroll gave false testimony during civil lawsuits she filed against Donald Trump.

The investigation reportedly focuses on statements Carroll made during a 2022 deposition, where she said she had not received outside funding for her legal battle against Trump. Later court filings revealed that LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman helped cover some of her legal costs.

Carroll previously won two major civil cases against Trump involving sexual assault and defamation claims. In 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation, while another ruling in 2024 ordered him to pay additional damages for defamatory remarks made in 2019.

Trump has denied all allegations and is appealing the judgments, including a $5 million award and a separate $83 million defamation ruling. Reports say the new investigation is being handled by the US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

The case adds another legal twist to the long-running dispute between Trump and Carroll as political and legal tensions continue to grow in the United States.
