Emergency crews have rescued Hernán Gil alive after he spent eight days trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building following the Venezuela twin earthquakes.
Gil was freed after rescuers from Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal and the United States carried out a complex operation. Teams had located him days earlier but faced repeated setbacks as access tunnels collapsed while they worked to reach him safely.
Rescuers said Gil remained in stable condition throughout the ordeal. They supplied him with water, protective equipment and intravenous fluids while maintaining communication until he was pulled to safety. Officials believe the concrete security booth where he was working shielded him from more than 140 tonnes of debris.
The twin earthquakes struck Venezuela on 24 June, killing at least 2,300 people and leaving tens of thousands still missing as search and rescue operations continue.
Gil’s rescue offers a rare moment of hope as emergency teams continue searching for survivors across the disaster zone.
