Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says the 2027 presidential election will be his final bid for Nigeria’s top office.
Atiku spoke on Wednesday during an interview on Prime Time on Arise Television.
“Certainly yes… I believe that will be my last outing. So that’s incontrovertibly a fact,” he said.
The former vice-president acknowledged that the stakes are higher for him in the upcoming election, given his long-standing involvement in Nigerian politics.
Responding to concerns about age and relevance, Atiku said his experience positions him to contribute meaningfully to the country’s leadership.
“I represent both the past and the future,” he said.
The presidential hopeful of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) argued that while younger leaders bring energy, they still require guidance and experience from older politicians.
“We have seen various levels of leadership in the country, both young and old… and I still believe that our expectations of the young leadership is below what we thought,” he said.
Atiku added that mentorship from experienced leaders is crucial, noting that some lessons can only be acquired within the structure of governance.
“Sometimes you need to be there,” he said, citing his experience working under former President Olusegun Obasanjo as formative to his political development.
