Nigeria’s Health Reform Needs Traditional Leaders to Succeed – Tinubu

Bola Tinubu addressed traditional and religious leaders at a summit in Abuja. He emphasized their crucial involvement in health reforms. Tinubu stated that no health reform in Nigeria succeeded without them.

Leaders gathered at the National Traditional and Religious Leaders Summit on Health, held at the Presidential Villa’s Conference Centre.

Tinubu noted the summit’s intergenerational and interfaith nature. He described it as a symbol of Nigeria’s united efforts. Furthermore he referenced the expansion of universal health coverage in November 2025. This included traditional leaders, civil society, and the private sector.

Calls for Strategic Partnerships

Tinubu urged partnerships in key areas. First he focused on strengthening maternal and newborn health. He explained that too many mothers and newborns died from preventable causes.

Second he stressed improving immunization and outbreak responses. Tinubu said communities listened to traditional rulers before the government. Therefore, rulers detected and responded to epidemics effectively.

Third he highlighted nutrition and food security. Tinubu noted that rulers influenced household decisions and rallied communities. As a result, they ensured support reached those in need. He assured them of government backing and state collaboration.

Commitments to Infrastructure and Programs

Tinubu outlined government actions. He mentioned work with governors and local chairmen to improve primary healthcare facilities. Additionally he encouraged leaders to check local facilities and report issues. Tinubu promised responses to their concerns.

He introduced the National Health Fellowship Programme from 2025. This selected young Nigerians from all local governments as system operators. Tinubu praised their contributions to coordination, data use, and fighting illnesses. Moreover he addressed malnutrition and pledged joint efforts on food banks.

Addressing National Stability

Tinubu thanked rulers for sustaining trust amid misinformation. He acknowledged their role in national development. In conclusion, he touched on terrorism and economic reforms. Tinubu assured victory over banditry with their cooperation.
