Umahi renames Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after Tinubu

David Umahi said the Ministry of Works approved the new name after consulting the Permanent Secretary, Minister of State, directors and other senior officials.

According to him, Tinubu conceived the coastal highway project about 27 years ago while serving as Governor of Lagos State. He said the President’s commitment made the project a reality.

“We decided to name it after him because of his dream for it.”

Umahi added that many people have ambitious ideas. However, he said only a few get the opportunity to bring them to life.

“It is one thing to dream and another thing to have the grace of God to actualise that dream.”

Minister highlights project features

Umahi described the first phase of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a major milestone for Nigeria’s transport sector.

The 47.47-kilometre section stretches from Victoria Island to Lekki. It features a six-lane carriageway and a 25-metre median reserved for a future railway line.

Furthermore, he said the project will improve connectivity, support economic growth and strengthen regional transportation.

Tinubu approves additional road projects

Umahi also announced that Tinubu approved another 400 kilometres for the Fourth Legacy Highway. The approval increases the project’s length from 700 kilometres to 1,100 kilometres.

The highway originally linked Akwanga in Nasarawa State to Maiduguri in Borno State through Jos, Bauchi, Gombe and Biu. However, the latest approval extends the route into Taraba State.

“President Bola Tinubu approved the addition of 400 kilometres to our Fourth Legacy Road.”

In addition, Tinubu approved another 400 kilometres of the East-West Road for dualisation. He also approved the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway with reinforced concrete pavement.

The President further approved the completion of the abandoned Ibi Bridge in Taraba State and the construction of the 5.76-kilometre Lao Bridge.

According to Umahi, the projects will improve connectivity, stimulate economic activities and modernise critical transport infrastructure across Nigeria.
