Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation magazine and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing some of its supporters of spreading propaganda to defend the government.
Momodu spoke on Wednesday during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a breakfast programme on Channels Television.
He said some defenders of the ruling party promote narratives that do not reflect the realities Nigerians face.
“There is a preponderance of propagandists who are willing to delete their brains and sell their souls for peanuts. That is why you see this cacophony of excuses on radio, on television and in the newspapers,” he said.
‘Is life better today?’
Momodu said the opposition will challenge the ruling party by asking Nigerians a simple question: ‘is life better today?’
He noted that the APC emerged from the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Yet, he said, the party now blames that same government for the country’s economic problems.
The ADC stalwart also questioned the government’s claim that it stabilised the exchange rate.
“They say they stabilised the exchange rate. But they forget to tell us what the dollar rate was when they took power,” he said.
Criticism of economic policies
Momodu criticised the government’s economic policies, citing the removal of fuel subsidy and the increase in borrowing.
He said Nigerians feel mostly the negative effects of those policies. According to him, the government has not shown clear benefits.
“You removed fuel subsidy from day one, but you have not been able to tell Nigerians how it has affected the country positively. What people feel are the negative effects,” he said.
He also expressed concern about rising government budgets and borrowing. Nigerians, he said, have yet to see the impact of those funds on development.
Momodu added that the ADC will confront the ruling party on key policy issues and demand answers.
