The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) has announced plans to deploy 100,000 vehicle conversion kits across Nigeria as part of efforts to reduce the impact of rising petrol prices and promote the use of cheaper fuel alternatives.
The development disclosed by Ismael Ahmed, Executive Chairman of PiCNG. After a closed-door meeting with Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Expanding Access to Cheaper Fuel
The initiative aims to help Nigerians convert petrol-powered vehicles to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Which widely considered a more affordable and cleaner fuel alternative.
Officials say the distribution of conversion kits will allow more drivers to switch from petrol to CNG. Potentially reducing transportation costs and easing the financial burden caused by high fuel prices.
Government Monitoring Programme Progress
According to Ahmed, the President requested a detailed update on the progress of the CNG programme and the steps taken to ensure its rapid implementation nationwide.
The briefing also focused on strategies to mitigate the effects of rising global petroleum prices. Particularly amid increasing geopolitical tensions affecting oil markets.
Response to Global Oil Market Pressures
Rising fuel prices have become a major concern for many countries due to global supply uncertainties and tensions in regions such as the Middle East, which play a crucial role in global oil production.
By expanding the use of CNG, the Nigerian government hopes to reduce reliance on petrol while making transportation more affordable for citizens.
Toward a Cleaner and More Affordable Energy Future
Energy experts say the rollout of 100,000 conversion kits could significantly expand Nigeria’s adoption of CNG-powered vehicles, especially for commercial transport operators.
If successfully implemented, the programme could help lower transportation costs. Also reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen Nigeria’s transition toward more sustainable energy solutions.
