‘Complete absence of leadership’ — Obi knocks Tinubu over Jos airport visit

Peter Obi

Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for meeting victims of the Jos attack at the airport instead of visiting affected communities.

Obi spoke on Friday in a post on X while reacting to Tinubu’s visit to Plateau state following the killings in Angwan Rukuba, Jos north LGA.

He said the president’s approach reflects a lack of empathy and leadership.

“What happened in Plateau highlights a complete absence of leadership,” he said.

Obi noted that Tinubu had similarly stopped at the Government House during his June 2025 visit to Benue without going to the scene of attacks.

“Yesterday in Jos, his engagement ended at the airport instead of at the affected communities,” he said.

He said true leadership requires presence and compassion, especially in moments of tragedy.

“For citizens who have lost loved ones and homes, being addressed from an airport tarmac is profoundly inadequate,” he said.

Obi added that such actions deepen the sense of abandonment felt by victims of repeated violence.

“This approach exacerbates the sense of abandonment already felt by innocent Nigerians,” he said.

He called for leadership that is responsive and physically present with affected communities.

“Leadership must be tangible — standing with victims, listening to survivors, and acknowledging their grief,” he said.
