Nigerian masquerades thrilled guests at the WTO Open Day in Geneva as Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala joined the dancers in a colourful celebration of Nigeria’s rich culture.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) Open Day in Geneva turned into a colourful celebration after Nigerian masquerades stole the spotlight. Visitors from different countries gathered to enjoy food, culture and traditions from WTO member nations. However, Nigeria’s display quickly became one of the biggest highlights. The lively performance brought excitement and proudly showcased the country’s rich cultural heritage.
The atmosphere became even more electric when the sound of the Ogene and Ichaka filled the venue. Moments later, the beautiful Adamma masquerade appeared in its colourful raffia costume and carved maiden mask.
Its energetic dance steps immediately grabbed everyone’s attention. International delegates, ambassadors and visitors watched with excitement as the masquerade brought the spirit of southeastern Nigeria to the heart of Geneva.
The excitement reached another level when WTO Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, stepped onto the dance floor. Dressed in her signature elegant silky gown, she smiled as the masquerade’s handlers invited her into the performance.
She accepted without hesitation and danced confidently to the traditional rhythm. The crowd responded with loud cheers as she matched the beat with graceful moves. In Igbo culture, a masquerade dancing with a respected leader is seen as a great honour and blessing.
Sharing photos and videos on X, Okonjo-Iweala celebrated the successful event. She wrote,
“So many #WTO Members made the Open Day fun with their food and cultural items.”
She also thanked participating countries for making the event memorable. Speaking about the celebration, she added,
“There are many beautiful photos of the day that will momentarily be up on the WTO website. Here are a few of me with some visiting children. Many thanks also to the many staff and the volunteers who made the day a successful one. Up WTO!”
The unforgettable performance has continued to trend online, with many Nigerians celebrating another proud moment for the country’s culture on the global stage.
