Nigeria’s leading carrier, Air Peace, has unveiled plans to expand its international footprint with new direct flights from Gateway International Airport to London, marking a major boost for regional aviation and connectivity.
A New International Gateway for Ogun State
The announcement was made by Air Peace CEO Allen Onyema following an inspection of the newly commissioned airport alongside state officials. According to Onyema, the airline intends to begin flights to both Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport this summer, further strengthening Nigeria–UK travel links.
Gateway International Airport, located in Ogun State, is designed to rival major aviation hubs. Boasting a 4-kilometre runway capable of handling large aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A380. Onyema described the facility as one of the best-equipped in Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasizing that Air Peace is committed to maximizing its potential.
Boost for Nigeria’s Aviation and Economy
The new route is expected to enhance Ogun State’s position as a growing business and tourism hub. Reducing congestion at Lagos airports while offering travelers more options. Air Peace plans to deploy its Boeing 777 fleet for the long-haul route, aligning with its broader international expansion strategy.
The development follows federal approval for the airline to proceed with the operations, signaling strong government backing. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also revealed plans for additional infrastructure. Including a conference centre and a five-star hotel, to complement the airport ecosystem.
With this move, Gateway International Airport is poised to become a key aviation hub in Nigeria. Potentially ranking among the country’s busiest airports while opening new economic opportunities for the region.
