Amupitan doesn’t have an X account, Grok hallucinates — INEC ICT director

The director of ICT of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says its chairman, Joash Amupitan, does not operate any account on X, alleging that Grok, X’s AI, is hallucinating.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Monday, Bayode said the allegations were rooted in digital impersonation and warned against relying solely on outputs from AI tools such as Grok.

His remarks come amid claims that an X account allegedly linked to the INEC chairman had been associated with an email address and phone number reportedly found in his official records.

The account was also flagged by X’s AI tool, Grok, which suggested a possible link between the handle and Amupitan based on matching contact details.

However, Bayode rejected the inference, describing it as a case of manipulated digital identity rather than factual verification.

He explained that email addresses and phone numbers available in public domains could be exploited to create misleading online profiles.

“What we are seeing is something bigger, honestly. What we are seeing is digital impersonation,” he said.

Bayode further noted that social media accounts can be renamed or altered, making attribution more complex without proper forensic verification.

He stressed that AI systems are not always reliable.

“Grok honestly can hallucinate just like any modern artificial intelligence system,” he said, adding that such outputs must be independently verified before being used for public communication or judgment.

INEC had, in a statement, described the allegation as “false and malicious.”
