‘He didn’t say victory for APC or PDP, only victory is sure,’ Akpabio reacts to Amupitan X controversy

Godswill Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio, president of the Senate, says the viral “victory is sure” post made on X by an account linked to Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC, has been misinterpreted, noting that the comment did not favour any political party.

Akpabio spoke on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service headquarters in Abuja.

“They brought out a tweet where they said the chairman of INEC said victory is sure. But he didn’t say victory is sure for APC. He did not say victory is sure for PDP. He just said victory is sure,” he said.

The Senate president added that the statement being circulated was made before Amupitan assumed any official role in INEC.

“He was not chairman of INEC then. He was just a male lecturer. Anybody can support anybody he wishes to,” he said.

Akpabio, however, said individuals holding public office must remain neutral in their conduct.

“But when you are on a seat, you have to think of the entire country and all the populace,” he added.

INEC said its chairman does not have any X account, describing the allegations as “false and malicious.”
The commission’s ICT director also dismissed Grok, X AI’s linking of the account to the INEC chairman’s email and phone number, saying that the AI is prone to hallucination.
