Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has warned that Peter Obi would be “working for” President Bola Tinubu if he exits the party over its presidential ticket.
Okonkwo made the remark during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme.
His comments come amid speculation that Obi may consider leaving the ADC if the party’s primary election is not conducted in a free and fair manner.
Obi had, during an interview at the party’s recent convention, hinted that he might reconsider his position if the process lacks transparency.
Reacting, Okonkwo said any presidential aspirant who leaves the ADC amid its current challenges would be undermining the opposition coalition.
“Anybody that goes out of the coalition is compromised and is working for Tinubu, whoever that person is,” he said.
He described such a move as politically unproductive, arguing that no single individual could achieve meaningful electoral success outside the coalition.
“If he leaves, will he now be a mobile squatter?” Okonkwo asked.
According to him, the strength of the opposition lies in unity, especially in the face of internal and external pressures.
“Even with the unity, look at what everybody is going through in ADC. What do you think one person can do going out?” he added.
The ADC has been grappling with internal disputes and leadership challenges, raising concerns about its cohesion ahead of the 2027 general election.
