President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni, president-elect of the Republic of Benin, on his victory in the April 12 presidential election.
Wadagni, the country’s minister of finance, secured a landslide victory with more than 94 percent of the votes, according to provisional results announced by Sacca Lafia, head of the country’s independent electoral commission.
His closest rival, Paul Hounkpè, had conceded defeat even before the official announcement of the results.
In a letter personally signed by the Nigerian president, Tinubu said Wadagni’s victory reflects the confidence of the Beninese people in his leadership.
“Your victory reflects the trust the Beninese people have placed in your vision and your distinguished record of service as minister of finance,” Tinubu said.
He also commended the government and people of Benin Republic for conducting what he described as a peaceful election, noting that the process demonstrates commitment to democratic values.
“This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history. I commend the people of Benin for their resilience and commitment to the democratic process and to maintaining peace during the election cycle,” he said.
Tinubu highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic, describing both countries as partners bound by shared history and cultural ties.
“Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation,” he said, expressing optimism about strengthening bilateral relations under Wadagni’s administration.
The president added that he looks forward to working with the incoming leader to deepen cooperation in areas such as regional security and economic development within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union.
“As you prepare to assume the responsibilities of the presidency, I wish you wisdom, fortitude, and success. You can rest assured of my full support and cooperation,” Tinubu said.
