Three people have died and several others were injured after a shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival near the city’s iconic Space Needle.
Police said two suspects exchanged gunfire shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time on Sunday. Officers arrested one suspect, while the second remains at large. Authorities, however, said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The shooting happened as thousands gathered for the annual food festival in one of Seattle’s busiest tourist areas. Two victims died at the scene, while a third later died in hospital. Among those injured was a two-year-old boy.
Videos shared online showed frightened visitors taking shelter inside the Space Needle. Many crouched behind pillars and display shelves as gunfire echoed through the area.
Witness Faith Adia Hunter said she and her friends were standing close to one of the shooters before running into the nearby Seattle Children’s Museum for safety.
Emergency responders transported four injured victims to hospital in stable condition. A fifth person declined medical treatment.
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson praised police officers for quickly responding and arresting one suspect. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal also condemned the attack, describing it as senseless violence.
Investigators continue to examine the incident and have urged the public to avoid the area while inquiries remain underway.
