Real Sociedad win Copa del Rey after shootout victory over Atlético Madrid

Real Sociedad ended a 38-year wait for a major trophy in front of fans after beating Atlético Madrid in a dramatic Copa del Rey final.

Real Sociedad lifted the Copa del Rey after a thrilling 2-2 draw ended in a penalty shootout victory over Atlético Madrid. Goalkeeper Unai Marrero became the hero of the night, saving two spot-kicks before Pablo Marín scored the winning penalty in Seville.

The final started in stunning fashion as Real Sociedad scored after just 13 seconds through Ander Barrenetxea. Atlético Madrid responded quickly, with Ademola Lookman equalising after a clever move involving Antoine Griezmann and Julián Alvarez.

Real Sociedad regained the lead before half-time when captain Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty after Gonçalo Guedes was fouled in the box. Atlético pushed hard in the second half and finally levelled late on through a superb finish from Alvarez.

Both teams created chances in extra time, but neither could find a winner. That sent the match to penalties, where Marrero produced two key saves against Alex Sørloth and Julián Alvarez. Marín then stepped up calmly to seal the trophy.

The victory gives Real Sociedad their fourth Copa del Rey title and their first trophy celebration with supporters present since their 2021 win was played behind closed doors during the pandemic.

Manager Pellegrino Matarazzo, who took charge four months ago, has transformed the club’s season and delivered silverware in remarkable fashion. The win is expected to boost confidence heading into next season.

For Real Sociedad fans, this was more than a cup win. It was a historic night of emotion, resilience, and unforgettable joy.
