Israel-Lebanon ceasefire extended by three weeks

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been extended after fresh diplomatic talks in Washington.

Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon will extend their current ceasefire by three weeks.

Trump made the announcement on social media shortly after a second round of talks between Israeli and Lebanese representatives at the White House on Thursday.

He also said he hopes to soon host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun for further discussions.

Speaking later from the Oval Office, Trump said he hopes there will be “no firing” during the three-week extension.

However, he noted that Lebanon still has to deal with Hezbollah, adding that the United States would continue working with Beirut to stabilize the country.

The original ceasefire was announced one week ago as fighting along the Israel-Lebanon border raised fears of a wider regional war.

The extension is seen as an attempt to create more time for diplomacy and reduce tensions in southern Lebanon.

Trump also said he hopes progress between Israel and Lebanon can move alongside separate efforts involving Iran.

With both sides agreeing to continue the pause, attention now turns to whether diplomacy can deliver a longer-term peace deal.
