Katsina to become regional oncology hub with new cancer centre

Katsina is preparing to strengthen cancer treatment in Nigeria with a major new specialist hospital.

Katsina State is set to become a regional oncology hub with the development of a new Advanced Imaging and Cancer Hospital.

The facility will include modern PET-CT scanners and precision radiotherapy systems designed to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment.

According to Mojisola Delumo, the centre’s expanded capacity could significantly reduce the number of Nigerians travelling abroad for costly cancer care.

She said the project aims to curb medical tourism by providing world-class treatment options locally.

Beyond specialist oncology services, officials say the wider goal is to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.

The cancer hospital is expected to work alongside improved primary and secondary health facilities, creating a more connected system where patients can move smoothly from early diagnosis to advanced treatment.

Cancer care remains a major challenge in Nigeria, where many patients face delayed diagnosis, limited equipment, and high treatment costs.

Experts believe more regional centres with advanced technology can ease pressure on overcrowded hospitals in larger cities.

The Katsina project could also create jobs, attract investment, and position the state as a healthcare destination in northern Nigeria.

If fully delivered, the new centre may become a major step forward for cancer treatment access in the country.
