Shehu Sani, former senator representing Kaduna Central, has said Nigeria’s leading political figures share the same ideological foundation, arguing that a change in government may not translate to real change for citizens.
Speaking in a recent interview on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Sani said President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar all subscribe to similar economic and political ideas.
“They all believe in Bretton Woods institutions. They believe in the IMF, the World Bank, free market, limited state intervention, and private property,” he said.
According to him, this shared ideological outlook means policy direction will remain largely the same, regardless of who is in power.
“Nothing is going to change. The names will change, but everything remains the same,” he said.
Sani argued that replacing one leader with another would only result in a reshuffling of individuals within the same system.
“If Tinubu is removed and Atiku comes in, you just change the names. If Obi becomes president, you still replace one person with another. The system remains the same,” he said.
He added that the Nigerian political class operates within a similar framework, regardless of party differences.
“If you want to understand Nigerian politicians, see them outside politics — at weddings, in mosques, in churches. You will realise there is no real difference,” he said.
