Arsenal draw Atletico Madrid as VAR penalty drama dominates

VAR controversy overshadowed Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in a tense Champions League semi-final first leg.

Arsenal secured a 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid, but the result was dominated by three major penalty decisions.

Viktor Gyokeres gave Arsenal the lead from the spot after being fouled in the box. Atletico equalised through Julian Alvarez, who converted a penalty following a handball decision against Ben White.

The biggest flashpoint came late in the game when the referee awarded Arsenal another penalty after a foul on Eberechi Eze. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, sparking anger from manager Mikel Arteta.

Arteta said there was “no clear and obvious error” to justify reversing the call and criticised the lack of explanation from officials.

The match followed a high-scoring semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, but this encounter was defined by refereeing decisions.

Arsenal now return to the Emirates Stadium with the tie finely balanced and controversy still lingering.
