Federal Government Closes Over 13.5 Million Social Media Accounts, Removes Nearly 59 Million Offensive Posts

In a bold move to sanitize Nigeria’s digital space, the Federal Government has deactivated approximately 13,597,057 social media accounts across major platforms—TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter)—due to violations of the recently implemented Code of Practice 2024.

This action is detailed in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and compiled by tech giants including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

NITDA Praises Tech Platforms

In a public statement, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications, praised the cooperation of these platforms. She emphasized that the initiative marks a vital step toward cultivating a safer, more responsible online environment for Nigerian users. She also noted that the Code encourages transparency, accountability, and consistent enforcement of digital standards
