Popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has reportedly died at the age of 40.
News of his death surfaced on Tuesday after several of his colleagues, including Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Godwin Nnadiekwe, shared emotional tributes on social media.
However, as of the time of filing this report, Ekubo’s family had not released any official statement confirming the development.
Funke Akindele, Ninalowo, Others Mourn
Actress Funke Akindele expressed shock and sadness over the news in a post shared on her Instagram story.
She wrote, “Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. ‘Ore mi,’ like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together.”
Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also paid tribute to the late movie star from the United States.
“Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all,” he wrote.
Godwin Nnadiekwe described the news as heartbreaking. According to him, Nollywood has lost a rare soul.
“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul. Rest well, my friend,” he stated.
Concerns Grew After Months of Silence
Before reports of his death emerged, fans had raised concerns about Ekubo’s wellbeing following his long absence from social media.
The actor stayed away from Instagram after his last post on December 30, 2024. His disappearance sparked widespread speculation among fans and followers.
Recently, a video showing Ekubo with a group of children surfaced online. In the clip, the actor appeared slimmer and quieter than usual.
The footage, shared by X user @AsakyGRN, quickly went viral and triggered emotional reactions across social media platforms.
Many fans questioned his health and expressed worries about his sudden withdrawal from public life.
Alex Ekubo’s Views on Marriage
Before his reported demise, Ekubo had repeatedly spoken about his focus on career growth and financial success.
In one of his Instagram posts, the actor suggested that he was more interested in building wealth than getting married. He also urged people to stop worrying about his marital status.
His past relationship with US-based model Fancy Acholonu also attracted public attention.
In January 2023, Acholonu revealed during an interview that she dated Ekubo for five years without intimacy.
The pair had planned to marry before their relationship ended in 2021 after Acholonu called off the wedding.
A year later, she publicly apologised to the actor and reaffirmed her love for him.
“Nothing makes sense when we’re apart. I miss you, I love you, and I’m truly sorry for all the hurt and pain,” she wrote at the time.

Despite the growing reactions online, Ekubo’s family has remained silent on the reports surrounding his death.
Fans and colleagues continue to mourn the actor, who was widely known for his roles in Nollywood films and his strong presence in the entertainment industry.
