Myanmar blast kills 46 in rebel-held Shan state village

A massive explosion in northern Myanmar has left dozens dead and injured in one of the region’s deadliest accidents this year.

At least 46 people were killed and 74 others injured after a huge explosion ripped through Kaung Tat village in Myanmar’s Shan State on Sunday, according to rescue workers.

The blast occurred in an area controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), near the Chinese border. Rescue teams said six children, including a one-year-old toddler, were among those killed. Around 200 homes in Kaung Tat and another 100 in nearby Pan Lone village were damaged.

The TNLA said explosives stored in a warehouse for local mining operations accidentally ignited, causing the explosion. Three Chinese nationals were also reported among the victims, while authorities have launched an investigation into the cause.

Rescue efforts are continuing as residents demand answers over why large quantities of explosives were stored near residential communities.
