Japan rejects China’s militarism claims, defends defence expansion

Japan has pushed back against China’s accusations of militarism, arguing that Beijing’s growing military arsenal poses a greater concern.

Japan’s Defence Minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, criticised China’s rapid military expansion and lack of transparency during a security summit in Singapore. He dismissed claims that Japan was pursuing a “new militarism” and insisted the country’s defence buildup is aimed at maintaining regional peace and security.

Koizumi said Japan remains committed to transparency as it increases defence spending and modernises its military capabilities. He also stressed that Tokyo remains open to dialogue with China despite rising tensions.

The remarks come amid growing friction between Japan and China over regional security issues, including Taiwan and military activities in the Asia-Pacific region. China has repeatedly criticised Japan’s record defence budgets and efforts to strengthen its military.

Japan says its defence reforms are necessary to address emerging threats while preserving stability in the region.
