The Canadian Prime Minister says Jewish Canadians are facing unprecedented levels of hate and discrimination.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Canada is failing its Jewish community as antisemitism continues to rise across the country. Speaking in Toronto, Carney said Jewish Canadians have become the primary targets of religion-based hate crimes despite making up only about one percent of the population.
Carney cited attacks on Jewish schools, synagogues, community centres, businesses and university students as evidence of a growing crisis. He described the situation as severe and called for urgent action to protect Jewish communities.
The comments come amid a global increase in antisemitic incidents following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023. Carney announced that Canada would invest 75 million Canadian dollars in security measures for faith-based institutions and establish a new advisory council to address hate and discrimination.
The Canadian government says it will continue introducing measures aimed at improving community safety while protecting freedom of expression.
