Switzerland travel to US without Embolo, ESTA under review

Swiss forward Breel Embolo missed his team’s departure after US travel authorisation was placed under review.

Switzerland’s World Cup squad travelled to the United States without striker Breel Embolo after his ESTA travel authorisation was unexpectedly placed under further review.

The Swiss Football Federation said Embolo’s approval had initially been granted but was later flagged by US authorities. The review is linked to a Swiss court ruling over an altercation in Basel in 2018. Embolo was convicted in 2023 of making multiple threats and received a suspended fine, with the judgement later upheld on appeal.

Swiss officials said they are in contact with US authorities and remain hopeful the 29-year-old forward will join the team. Embolo previously entered the United States without issues for international friendlies in 2025.

The striker has scored 23 goals in 85 appearances for Switzerland and played at the last two FIFA World Cups. His absence comes as the team begins preparations for the 2026 tournament.

Switzerland expects Embolo to resolve the travel issue soon and rejoin the squad ahead of their World Cup opener.
