Ukraine launched fresh attacks on Russian-linked vessels while renewing calls for direct peace talks with Moscow.
Ukraine says it struck five cargo ships operating in the Sea of Azov and waters near Russian-occupied territories. According to Ukrainian officials, the vessels were transporting military supplies, fuel and Ukrainian grain taken from occupied regions.
Ukraine’s drone forces commander said the ships were targeted overnight near the ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk. He accused the vessels of helping Russia move military cargo while disguising their operations by switching off tracking systems.
Zelensky Pushes for Direct Talks
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed his call for face-to-face talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In an open letter, Zelensky urged Moscow to agree to direct negotiations and a full ceasefire to help end the war.
The Kremlin confirmed it had received the letter and said Putin would be briefed on its contents.
Romania Reports Drone Explosion
Ukraine also confirmed that one of its naval drones exploded off Romania’s Black Sea coast after reportedly being diverted by Russian electronic warfare systems. Romanian authorities said no injuries were recorded, although damage was reported near a port facility.
Additionally, Azerbaijan confirmed that five of its citizens were killed in attacks involving two of the targeted vessels. The ships, however, were not owned by Azerbaijan.
Fighting Continues Despite Peace Calls
The latest developments come as Putin prepares to deliver a key speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. They also follow recent Ukrainian drone attacks near St. Petersburg.
While Kyiv is calling for direct talks, both sides continue to exchange military strikes, showing how far apart they remain on conditions for ending the war.
The renewed attacks and diplomatic moves highlight the growing pressure on both Ukraine and Russia to find a path toward peace.
