A nationwide power outage plunged Jamaica into darkness, prompting an urgent investigation.
Jamaica experienced an island-wide blackout on Friday, leaving homes and businesses without electricity across the country.
Energy Minister Daryl Vaz confirmed the outage in a post on X, describing it as an “island-wide blackout.” He said efforts were underway to restore power and that some areas had already begun receiving electricity.
According to the minister, all power stations were being restarted as crews worked to restore the national grid.
The country’s main electricity provider, Jamaica Public Service Company, said it had launched an investigation to determine the cause of the outage.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness was informed of the situation as authorities monitored restoration efforts.
Vaz described the blackout as unacceptable and said a full investigation would be conducted into the incident.
Officials expect power to be restored gradually as the investigation into the Jamaica nationwide blackout continues.
