David Umahi, minister of works, has criticised politicians who blame President Bola Tinubu for the country’s security challenges, saying insecurity predates the current administration.
In a recent video that has gone viral online, the former governor of Ebonyi state said it was unfair for critics to speak as though insecurity began under Tinubu’s government.
“When people who call themselves politicians insult the president and talk about insecurity as if insecurity just started within the administration of the president, it’s very unfortunate,” Umahi said.
The minister argued that security is a collective responsibility and should not be turned into a political tool.
“Security is the job of everyone,” he said.
“Security should not be politicised.”
Umahi also questioned why security concerns tend to intensify around election periods, suggesting that some actors may be exploiting the situation for political purposes.
“Why is it that any time you try to have an election, there is heightened insecurity?” he asked.
“This is very unfair.”
The minister said he remained confident that Tinubu’s administration would overcome the security challenges confronting the country.
“But this insecurity will also be solved by this president,” he said.
“We will all be grateful to God Almighty because when God has called you to lead, there is nothing anybody can do.”
TINUBU’S ECONOMIC REFORMS
Umahi further praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, claiming that the administration had stabilised key economic indicators despite the difficulties facing the country.
“The president has been able to stabilise the economy in so many directions,” he said.
“The macroeconomy is stabilised, the naira is stable, and we are beginning to see the gains of the reforms.”
He also offered prayers for schoolchildren, teachers and other Nigerians currently being held captive by kidnappers and terrorists.
“We continue to pray for our students who are in captivity,” he said.
“God will save them wherever they are and reunite them with their families.”
