More than one million people gathered in Madrid to attend a historic mass led by Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo XIV celebrated an open-air mass in Madrid on Sunday, attracting more than one million worshippers, according to the Vatican.

The mass took place at Plaza de Cibeles during the second day of the Pope’s official visit to Spain. Thousands lined the streets as the pontiff travelled through the city, waving flags, cheering and throwing flower petals. Spain’s monarchs, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, were among those in attendance.

The Vatican said around 1.2 million people gathered across Madrid, while hundreds of thousands had also attended a prayer vigil led by the Pope near Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Saturday night. During his visit, Pope Leo praised Spain’s commitment to peace, international law and support for migrants.

The trip marks the first papal visit to Spain in about 15 years and includes meetings with abuse survivors, an address to parliament and a planned visit to the Canary Islands.

Pope Leo XIV’s visit has drawn huge crowds and reinforced his calls for peace, compassion and support for vulnerable communities.
