Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC), has met with health professionals in the United States to discuss ways to improve Nigeria’s healthcare system.
In an X post on Saturday, Obi shared a picture of himself with a group of men in the US, saying that his commitment to expanding health insurance coverage remains unchanged ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi had earlier pledged in his acceptance speech as the presidential candidate of the NDC that his administration would increase healthcare spending to at least 10 percent of Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) if elected president in 2027.
Obi said the meeting formed part of efforts to deepen his understanding of effective healthcare systems and improve access to quality medical services in Nigeria.
“As part of our desire and commitment to building a healthier Nigeria, I met with some healthcare professionals and experts in the United States on Friday, June 5, 2026,” he said.
“The meeting was essentially to deepen my understanding of how successful health insurance systems deliver improved healthcare, especially in the areas of primary and emergency care.”
The former governor said his health policy priorities would focus on expanding insurance coverage, strengthening primary healthcare facilities and improving the country’s health workforce.
“One of our key health objectives remains unchanged: to expand health insurance coverage, strengthen primary healthcare across our electoral wards, train more healthcare workers, and make quality healthcare accessible and affordable for all Nigerians,” he said.
Obi maintained that improving healthcare outcomes would be central to his vision for national development.
“A New Nigeria must be a healthier Nigeria,” he added.
