Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC), has donated N10 million to Mother of Christ Specialist Hospital in Enugu following a recent fire outbreak at the facility.
Obi disclosed this in a post on X on Friday after visiting the hospital.
Obi inspects damaged facilities
During the visit, Obi inspected sections of the hospital damaged by the fire.
The affected areas included the children’s ward.
Furthermore, he announced a N10 million donation to support ongoing renovation efforts at the facility.
“Today, I visited the Mother of Christ Specialist Hospital, Enugu State, which was recently affected by a devastating fire incident,” he said.
“During the visit, I inspected the damaged sections of the hospital, including the children’s ward, and made a donation of ₦10 million to support the ongoing renovation efforts.”
Obi commends hospital management
Meanwhile, Obi praised the Reverend Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the hospital’s management for their commitment to healthcare delivery.
He described their service as a valuable contribution to society.
“I commend the Reverend Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the hospital management for their commitment to healthcare delivery and service to humanity,” he said.
“Their sacrifice and dedication, often carried out with little recognition, remain invaluable to our society.”
‘Healthcare, education remain critical’
In addition, Obi stressed the importance of investing in healthcare and education.
According to him, no country can achieve meaningful development if those sectors are neglected.
“Healthcare and education are among the most critical needs of any nation,” he said.
“No meaningful development can occur where these sectors are neglected.”
The former presidential candidate urged governments, institutions and citizens to support organisations providing healthcare and educational services.
Call for collective investment
Obi also encouraged the hospital management to remain committed to its mission despite the challenges posed by the fire incident.
“As a society, we must collectively invest in and strengthen facilities for healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation,” he said.
He added that sustained support for such institutions would improve the welfare and dignity of citizens.
