A record-breaking heatwave has left thousands without electricity as France braces for its hottest day yet.
France is facing widespread disruption as a severe heatwave pushes temperatures to extreme levels across the country. About 68,000 homes in Brittany lost power, while forecasters warned temperatures could reach 43°C in parts of southwestern France on Wednesday.
More than half of France remains under a red heat alert, with authorities extending warnings to 58 regions. The country recorded its hottest day and hottest night since records began, with temperatures surpassing 44°C in some areas.
The heatwave is also spreading across Europe, triggering weather alerts in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Croatia, Hungary and the United Kingdom. French officials say at least 40 people have died in heatwave-related drowning incidents since last week.
Authorities expect temperatures to begin easing from Friday, although thunderstorms, flash floods and large hailstorms could follow the intense heat.
France remains on high alert as emergency services continue to respond to the impacts of the unprecedented heatwave.
