French authorities say the risk to the public remains very low despite the country’s first confirmed Ebola infection.
France has confirmed its first Ebola case after a doctor returned from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The doctor was immediately admitted to a specialised medical facility and is reported to be in stable condition.
The French Health Ministry said a dedicated monitoring system for aid workers returning from DR Congo helped identify the case quickly. Authorities are now tracing anyone who may have come into contact with the doctor.
The confirmation comes as DR Congo battles a major Ebola outbreak that has killed more than 260 people and infected over 1,000 others. Uganda has also reported cases, while health experts warn the outbreak could become one of the largest in recent history.
French health officials say containment measures are in place as efforts continue to prevent further spread of the virus.
