Kenya to charge students with murder over deadly school fire

Eight students are set to face murder charges after a school fire killed 16 girls in central Kenya.

Kenyan prosecutors have approved murder charges against several students accused of involvement in a deadly fire at Utumishi Girls’ School in Gilgil. The blaze, which broke out on May 28, killed 16 students and left dozens injured.

According to investigators, the fire started in a dormitory housing more than 200 students after mattresses were allegedly set ablaze near an exit. Police said CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and witness interviews linked eight students to the planning and execution of the incident.

Authorities said the victims were trapped when the fire spread rapidly through the overcrowded dormitory, while an emergency exit reportedly failed to open. The suspects are expected to be formally charged in court on Friday.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about school safety in Kenya, where boarding school fires have repeatedly claimed lives. Education officials say preliminary findings revealed overcrowding and multiple safety violations at the school.

Kenyan prosecutors say those responsible for the deadly school fire will be held fully accountable under the law.
