NDLEA Seizes Over 9,000kg of Illicit Drugs, Arrests 260 Suspects at Lagos Airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 9,058.543 kilograms of illicit drugs at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, while arresting 260 suspected drug traffickers since the beginning of 2025.

The Commander of the NDLEA MMIA Strategic Command, Mohammad Ahmad, disclosed the figures on Friday during the commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Ahmad also revealed that the command secured the conviction of 101 offenders, describing the achievements as evidence of the agency’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking through innovative enforcement strategies.

He said the command’s success was driven by intelligence-led operations and urged stronger collaboration among government agencies, communities and stakeholders to curb illicit drug trafficking through Nigeria’s busiest international gateway.

The 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was marked under the theme: “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”

Also speaking at the event, retired Assistant Commander-General of Narcotics Ibiba Odili called on Nigerians to actively support anti-drug campaigns, stressing that collective action remains vital in reducing substance abuse and disrupting drug trafficking networks.

The NDLEA says it will continue strengthening enforcement efforts while working with partners to protect Nigeria from the growing threat of illicit drugs.
