‘Some people are looking for excuses to truncate opposition parties’ — Dickson alleges

Seriake Dickson

Seriake Dickson, senator representing Bayelsa West and national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has alleged that some persons are looking for flimsy reasons to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

Dickson spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Dismisses logo controversy

Dickson dismissed claims that the NDC’s logo resembles those of the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Peace Movement Party (PMP).

He noted that INEC had initially declined to register the NDC because its two-finger victory symbol was said to resemble the APC’s broom logo.

‘They’re looking for flimsy excuses’

Furthermore, Dickson alleged that the controversy over the party’s logo is a pretext to undermine the opposition.

According to him, some political actors are determined to destabilise opposition parties.

“What people are trying to do is to look for flimsy reasons to truncate the political opposition,” he said.

“To destabilise, weaken and scatter the political opposition.”

Warns against weakening democracy

Meanwhile, the former Bayelsa governor said the development should worry all Nigerians.

He urged political leaders to protect the country’s democratic space.

“We know that a growing party with credible and dynamic leaders will cause concerns in some quarters,” he said.

“But they should push this with care.”

“All of us as leaders have a duty to nurture and protect our nation’s democracy.”

Says plot against NDC will fail

Dickson also dismissed suggestions that efforts are being made to keep the NDC off the 2027 ballot.

He expressed confidence that such attempts would not succeed.

“That will not succeed,” he said.
