Brazil booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup last 16 after Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic 96th-minute winner in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Japan.
Japan made the brighter start and deservedly took the lead in the first half. Kaishu Sano capitalised on a misplaced pass from Danilo, drove forward and fired a low shot into the bottom corner to put the Asian side ahead.
Brazil struggled before the break but came out stronger in the second half. Veteran midfielder Casemiro equalised 10 minutes after the restart, heading home Gabriel’s cross from close range.
The five-time world champions pushed hard for a winner. Vinicius Jr almost produced a moment of brilliance, beating two defenders before seeing his effort tipped onto the post by Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
Just when extra time looked certain, Japan lost possession near their own penalty area. Bruno Guimarães quickly found Martinelli, who calmly took a touch before slotting the ball in off the post to seal victory.
Brazil’s comeback sends Carlo Ancelotti’s side into the next stage, while Japan exit the tournament after a brave performance that came within seconds of forcing extra time.
Brazil will now turn their attention to the last 16 as they continue their quest for a sixth World Cup title.
