Nigerian businessman ‘Big Joe’ Allegedly shot dead in South Africa

A popular Nigerian businessman known as Big Joe has been shot dead outside his shop in Witbank, also called Emalahleni, in South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers walked up to him and opened fire several times before fleeing the area.

Residents and fellow traders rushed to the scene after hearing the gunshots. Sadly, Big Joe later died from his injuries. Graphic videos shared on social media showed him lying in a pool of blood, leaving many Nigerians shocked and heartbroken.

Meanwhile, the tragic killing has increased fears among foreign nationals living in South Africa. The attack happened as reports claimed that some anti-foreigner groups had issued a June 30 ultimatum.

The groups allegedly asked foreigners to close their businesses and leave certain communities. As a result, many Nigerian business owners in Witbank, Johannesburg, and Pretoria now fear for their safety.

Although South African police have not linked the shooting to xenophobic violence, many Nigerians believe the incident reflects the growing tension faced by immigrants in the country.

In addition, the latest attack has renewed calls for better protection of Nigerians living abroad. Previous anti-foreigner protests forced hundreds of Nigerians to leave South Africa or return home for safety.

Many community leaders are now urging both the Nigerian and South African governments to investigate the killing and strengthen security.

As the search for the gunmen continues, many hope justice will be served and fresh violence will be prevented.
