Gunmen launched another attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, late Wednesday. Security operatives fought back and killed one suspected attacker during the exchange of gunfire.
The attack happened around 11 p.m. However, the gunmen failed to enter the institute after security personnel responded quickly. The incident is the latest in a series of attacks targeting the country’s foremost policy institute.
Security Operatives Repel Attack
The Head of Public Affairs at NIPSS, Dr. Osime Samuel, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Thursday.
He said security operatives immediately confronted the attackers. During the gun battle, they killed one suspected gunman, while several others escaped with injuries.
“The attackers engaged security operatives in a gun duel but were forced to retreat following the swift and coordinated response of the security forces. One of the assailants was neutralised during the encounter, while others escaped with varying degrees of injuries.”
NIPSS Assures Staff and Participants
The institute said the attackers did not breach its security perimeter. It also confirmed that no participant, staff member, or resident suffered any injury during the incident.
NIPSS praised the professionalism of the security operatives. The management also said security agencies have increased surveillance around the institute as they continue efforts to arrest the fleeing suspects.
Fresh Attack Raises Security Concerns
The latest incident has renewed concerns over repeated attacks on the institute. It also highlights the security challenges facing strategic public institutions in parts of the country.
Meanwhile, NIPSS urged members of the public to remain calm and ignore unverified reports. The institute assured stakeholders that security agencies remain on alert to protect lives and property.
