Ukraine says it has hit one of Russia’s largest oil terminals in a fresh long-range drone attack.
Ukraine launched a major overnight drone operation targeting a St Petersburg oil terminal, with President Volodymyr Zelensky saying the facility is a key source of revenue for Russia’s war effort. Ukraine also claimed it struck a major Russian Baltic Fleet naval base in Kronstadt, about 850km from the Ukrainian border.
St Petersburg Governor Aleksandr Beglov confirmed the city came under a “massive” drone attack and acknowledged that the oil terminal was hit, although he reported no casualties. Ukrainian officials say the terminal is one of Russia’s largest petroleum facilities, capable of producing 12.5 million tonnes of fuel products annually.
Kyiv has intensified attacks on Russian energy infrastructure in recent months, arguing that oil and gas facilities are legitimate military targets because they finance Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia says it intercepted dozens of drones and warned that the strikes would not go unanswered.
The latest strike highlights Ukraine’s growing campaign to disrupt Russia’s energy sector as the war enters its fifth year.
